  • Eagle Camera Project | Pymatuning Lake Asso

Help bring an Eagle Camera to Pymatuning. The Pymatuning Lake Association is currently working with Pymatuning State Park management to install an eagle camera on one of the nests within the park. The camera would be live-streamed so folks could watch the eagles during nesting and the eaglets after they hatch. It will also be a valuable asset for our Environmental Educators to teach students about our national bird. Our goal is to raise $10,000 total, which will not only purchase the camera equipment, but help pay for the necessary internet connection and subscription to be able to live-stream for the next 5 years. Our area also supports one of the largest concentrations of nesting Bald Eagles in the state and Pymatuning is the only known place in Pennsylvania where bald eagles have nested continuously, even through their population decline in the mid-1900s. Today, park visitors can spot eagles nesting and soaring over the lake throughout the year and during the winter months, eagles can often be seen sitting on the ice. This year, we had 15 nests around the lake and at least 11 of those had eggs. $20 raised Fundraising goal: $10,000 $10,000 1% Frequency One time One time Monthly Monthly Yearly Yearly Amount $20 $20 $50 $50 $100 $100 $200 $200 Other Other 0/100 Comment (optional) Donate $20 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Fly Higher, Together

  • Park Information | Pymatuning Lake Association

Pymatuning State Park is a gem in the PA State Park system. Encompassing almost 20,000 acres, there is something for everyone to do. About Pymatuning State Park “All human accomplishments begin with a dream.” The Honorable Gifford Pinchot, then governor of Pennsylvania, delivered these stirring words as part of his address at the Pymatuning reservoir ground breaking in 1931. Pinchot was fulfilling a Pennsylvania dream that began in 1868 when the General Assembly provided a survey and an estimate of the cost to drain the Pymatuning swamp to create farmlands. However, the swamp was not drained because it would cripple the industries downstream in the Beaver and Shenango Valleys. A severe flood in 1913 spurred the legislature to action. The Pymatuning Act, signed the same year, appropriated $100,000 to initiate building a dam. The Pymatuning Act states that the primary purpose of the Pymatuning Reservoir shall be for the conservation of waters entering the Pymatuning Swamp and for regulating the flow of water in the Shenango and Beaver Rivers. A secondary purpose is to use the dam and lake as a reservoir to impound flood water during periods of excessive runoff from the 158 square miles of drainage area above the dam. Construction of the concrete “spillway bowl” allowed independent regulation of the 2,500-acre upper reservoir to provide optimal wildlife habitat. It took 18 years for public and private organizations to raise the funds needed to build the dam. Work began in the fall of 1931. It took three years and almost 7,000 men to turn the dream into a reality. Almost everything about Pymatuning State Park is big. At 16,892 acres, it is one of the largest state parks in the commonwealth. The 17,088-acre Pymatuning Reservoir is the largest lake in the commonwealth and Pymatuning is one of the most visited state parks in Pennsylvania. Perhaps the biggest thing about Pymatuning is the fun you can have boating, fishing, swimming, camping, and enjoying other recreational opportunities. In addition to the state park facilities, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission operates a fish hatchery and visitor center, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission has wildlife viewing areas. • About Us | Pymatuning Lake Association

Pymatuning Lake Association was founded in 1945 to support and preserve the Pymatuning Lake region. Our Story At the Pymatuning Lake Association (PLA), we strive to make Pymatuning Lake a place that people of all ages can enjoy. Since 1945, we have partnered with the Ohio and Pennsylvania Pymatuning State Parks to preserve the lake and promote the Pymatuning Lake area. By giving each penny we raise back to the community, we hope generations for years to come can make great memories on the shores of Pymatuning Lake. We are 100% volunteer, and every penny goes right back into making the lake a great place to fish, hike, boat, or sit back and enjoy. We have supported work to install benches, handicap parking, handicap rails for boaters to get in and out of their boats, pavilions, cemented boat ramps, installed cribs (fish habitat), completed shoreline cleanups, and supported hosts of other projects over the years. These projects cost thousands of dollars, and are primarily funded through memberships, grants, and donations. • Onion Festival | Pymatuning Lake Asso

The Pymatuning Lake area has a long history in agriculture, particularly with the humble onion. Each year, Pymatuning State Park hosts the Onion Festival to honor that history. Pymatuning State Park Onion Festival At one time, Linesville was the onion capital of the United States, distributing its fragrant produce via the Erie & Pittsburgh Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Prior to the creation of the lake, the area was known as Pymatuning Swamp. Little would grow in the mucky swamp soil, but local farms found they could grow onions, and that the onions would grow well. Some grew to eight inches in diameter! By 1918, half of all of the state’s onions were grown in the Linesville area. As a nod to this history, Pymatuning State Park and the Pymatuning Lake Association partner to hold the annual Onion Festival on the second weekend in July. This free community event features local craft vendors, live music, and delicious food, including the massive Bloomin' Onions.
